Test: Water pump pliers MaxiMX from NWS

03/01/2018

Water pump pliers are found in almost every toolbox. Although it is hardly noticeable at first glance, there are serious differences between the different models. We took a closer look at the new MaxiMX from NWS.
The mouth width of the NWS MaxiMX is adjusted by a push-button. The advantage over the conventional design is that the setting works more precisely and faster.

Configuration

The MaxiMX in 250 mm is the most commonly used size. The sizes 180 mm and 300 mm should follow soon. The gripping surface has a nail and wire holder. Optional soft jaws are available to protect delicate surfaces.

Practice

The design of the pliers jaw is comparatively dull, the head is built quite narrow. This makes the NWS MaxiMX less suitable for picking up fine objects with a pointed mouth, but rather for grabbing in tight spaces. The self-clamping of the pliers while holding or rotating round objects also works well due to the very aggressive toothing. If objects with sensitive surfaces are to be gripped, we recommend the use of the optional soft jaws. Otherwise, the NWS water pump pliers scores with an exceptionally wide adjustment range as well as with its narrow, yet very robust design.

Conclusion

The MaxiMX by NWS is a solid water pump pliers with push-button adjustment, which is characterized by a large adjustment range and its slim design. Noteworthy are the excellent self-clamping and the optionally available soft jaws.
